McDowell’s tactics an abuse of power

CONTRARY to the view expressed by Sorcha Healy (Letters, May 31), there is little to commend a Minister for Justice who abuses his powers to make public unsubstantiated accusations against either a political opponent (Gerry Adams) or an ordinary citizen (Frank Connolly).

When Michael McDowell made such charges knowing they could neither be proved nor disproved, he was not only acting maliciously, but disgraced his office.

Ms Healy resented the fact that the minister was jeered and heckled as he departed public life.

She said his mistake was not to have pulled the plug on Bertie Ahern when he had the chance.

Therefore, would I be correct in guessing that Ms Healy would have privately jeered — and maybe even heckled — if she had watched the Taoiseach take that tumble on TV?
