‘Piggyback’ train would make our roads safer
The Americans came up with the idea that at each port of entry a special train, known as the ‘piggyback’, would be on hand to take on board any lorries being discharged from boats trading between the major ports of the world.
If we used that system in the south-east, starting in Rosslare and continuing on to Cork city, it would cover major ports at Cork, Waterford and Rosslare. It would not alone reduce the number of lorries but also cars because there are passenger carriages at the front of the piggyback train.
