Vote early and often: an official invitation

I WAS amused before polling day to receive four voting cards.

Surprised by this I went to the online service www.checktheregister.ie and was able to confirm that I was indeed registered to vote four times — once in the constituency where I grew up and my parents still live, once in the constituency where I currently live and twice at a previous address in Dublin, with the address of the apartment spelt slightly differently.

Amazingly, it seems our public servants spent €12 million to ‘clean up’ the register. On radio the other morning I heard of many people who were totally disenfranchised as a result of this latest effort to ensure our democratic rights.
