Sexual heath study - Compelling case for pill availability
It shows, for instance, that 73% of young people believe the morning-after pill should be easily accessible and made available over the counter.
At present, the emergency contraception pill is prescribed by GPs on a case by case basis.
Arguably, should these findings be reflected across the country, there could be a compelling case for the pill to be made available from chemists without needing prescriptions or the approval of a doctor.
Involving 166 young people aged 16 and 17 in Waterford city, the study also deals with such issues as sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, and information for young people.
The new minister should also give serious consideration to creating teenage clinics to educate young people about sexual health.
