Give young journalists a chance

DURING the last couple of weeks I have noticed that most of the sports pages in the Irish Examiner contain articles written by former players and managers.

Give young journalists a chance

Former Cork boss Donal O’Grady has a column, as did Tony Considine, the Clare hurling manager. Ray Silke, Galway’s All-Ireland winning captain, and Mick O’Dwyer, Wicklow manager, also have columns.

All are great servants of the game, but are not journalists. What chance have students studying journalism at third level of gaining any experience with so many ex-GAA greats filling up pages?
