Frustration rife across the country

PLANS to establish youth cafes in communities across the State have suffered a setback with the closure of a popular urban centre as a result of anti-social behaviour.

Frustration rife across the country

Regrettably, the youth cafe at Ballinlough in Cork has been closed by the Community Association despite claims that young people there will suffer because of the actions of others.

This highlights the chronic lack of youth facilities in cities and towns across the country.

In many areas, the main recreation activity for teenagers is to “hang around,”, with all that implies.

Doubtless, the frustration felt by young people in five East Cork towns where facilities are sadly lacking, is replicated nationwide.

Meanwhile, guidance counsellors warn that second- level students are turning to drink and drugs to escape depression.

Unless such warnings are heeded, Ireland’s social problems will escalate.
