‘Bull-headed’ action putting life at risk

THE wanton destruction by the National Roads Authority of important sites of natural and historical heritage in the Gabhra Valley and around Lismullin and Rath Lugh near Tara is unbelievable.

‘Bull-headed’ action putting life at risk

It is also sad to hear that people have now been injured (one seriously) due to failure to observe health and safety requirements in the rush to force the motorway through.

There has also been total disregard for protected wildlife in Lismullin Wood — which should have been highlighted by an environmental impact assessment — a flagrant breach of the EU Habitats Directive.

Dr Muireann Ní Bhrolcháin of the Save Tara campaign has expressed disgust at this assault on the landscape and questions the whole approach and policy being adopted by the NRA and Meath County Council.

Why will they not concentrate on necessary work at Dunshaughlin and Navan while there are serious concerns regarding the Tara situation — Ireland has already been heavily fined for not coming up to EU environmental standards.

This kind of bull-headed action by the authorities is only going to get someone killed and bring more fines from the EU while infuriating thousands of people in Ireland who care for its heritage, which is also a tourist attraction. It is time that the Government made an effort to understand what is involved here and that it re-appraises the situation.
