Barnardos poll - Children’s rights must be enshrined

WHILE it may not be easy to come up with a perfect formula of words to strengthen the position of children in the Constitution, that must not be used as a convenient excuse for watering down or stalling resolution of this vexed issue.

The difficulties likely to confront those framing the constitutional change were eloquently described yesterday by Minister for Children, Brian Lenihan.

But surely, given the ground swell of popular support for change, it should not be beyond the political and legal resources of the State to surmount the legal obstacles.
