After practically a week of stubbornly remaining mute on the issue of private donations he received from businessmen when he was minister for finance more than a decade ago, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern last evening defended his probity on national television.

Today, it is incumbent upon him to amplify upon those answers when facing the opposition in the Dáil.
