WITH all the news of wars, terror threats, assaults and killings, it would be easy to think nobody can be trusted and strangers are not ‘friends you haven’t met’, but potential attackers.

So it was with surprise and great gratitude that I experienced something completely different last week. It sounds little, but it made my day and enhanced my opinion of those around me.

I was meeting a friend for dinner on Thursday evening. He collected me at Glasheen Road in Cork. When we got into town I discovered I didn’t have my mobile phone. He then received a voicemail from a man who said he had found a phone and wondered if my friend (the last number I had rung) could pass the message on to the owner.
