Speed cameras are just for revenue collection

THE introduction of contracted speed cameras will do little to resolve the carnage on our roads.

Speed cameras are just for revenue collection

As in the UK, these cameras will be used as a licence by the Government to print money in the form of fines. The cameras will be positioned in areas which will result in the greatest number of fines — dual carriageways and motorways. Therefore the high speed antics of drivers will move to secondary roads. We need to address the problem of speeding drivers from outside the State — especially those from Northern Ireland and eastern Europe. And drivers living here from countries that drive on the right should be made to apply for an Irish driving license.

The campaign against drink driving has failed and it’s obvious that these drivers are no longer concerned about the penalties. There should be compulsory confiscation of the car driven by a convicted drink driver, a mandatory prison sentence and a mandatory 10-year driving ban.

Our L-driver policy is a joke. We need to train people how to drive responsibly and in all conditions. County councils need to be held legally accountable for road conditions and signage. I can list numerous roads around me that lack basic markings either as a result of resurfacing or wear.
