Funding opportunities puts profit over people
Dana Scallon warned about it for seven years. Cardinal O’Connell, Cardinal Daly, the Irish Bishops and Pro Life Campaign all knew. They were briefed by Ms Scallon but ignored her and remained politically silent.
I am delighted the penny has finally dropped for the bishops and wish them well in their endeavours to change the politicians’ minds.
It is a pity the prelates did not actively support Ms Scallon when she took the lead in opposing the destruction of those embryos in such work.
Throughout her term as an MEP, and in particular during Ireland’s presidency of the EU (2003-2004), Ms Scallon challenged Bertie Ahern, Mary Harney, FG, SF, Labour and fellow MEPs on all the political parties’ support for funding of destructive embryo research
Not only are we now faced with this illegal use of taxpayers’ money but the Irish Government will decide “when life begins”, with surrogate motherhood and stem cell research set to be approved.
As we top the EU wealth league, Ireland no doubt will be one of those few countries bidding for the billions of euro of EU funding — merely for economic reasons. Isn’t it amazing what people will do for money, power and politics?
