Council criticised for not cleaning up beach

AS a local resident I feel I must express my disgust and shame at the state of Tramore beach on the Tuesday and Wednesday evenings following last week’s bank holiday.

Council criticised for not cleaning up beach

None of the rubbish had been cleared from the beach during that 24-hour period. I am aware that Irish people have a very lax attitude when it comes to litter, but this does not excuse the failure of the local authority to clean the beach each day.

The litter was left to be carried away by the tide to litter other beaches such as Garris, Kilfarrasy and the surrounding coastline.

In this day and age of rules and regulations regarding the disposal and recycling of waste, the local authority must be in contravention of the relevant EU regulations and has a duty of care to clean the beaches regardless of ‘budget’ issues.

If our councillors used the money to provide cleaning crews instead of flying off to New York on junkets, I might give them my vote in the next election. As of now I will be exercising the franchise by not voting for the incumbents.

My job requires me to travel around the country on a weekly basis. I have to say that within the county of Waterford, Tramore is the worst presented town in the region.

Dungarvan, which is only 50km up the road, is well presented with groomed approach roads, nice flower beds and negligible litter.

Is it any wonder that Tramore constantly gets slated in the press and in travel books?
