US should not use UN as a political shield

I WAS confused by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s remarks, quoted in your report headlined “Iran refuses to give in to security council” (Irish Examiner, April 28).

US should not use UN as a political shield

By stating that “the (UN) security council is the primary and most important institution for the maintenance of peace and stability, and it cannot have its will and its word simply ignored by a member state,” Dr Rice is implying that the US is not a member of the security council.

I wish a day would come when the US would honestly stand up and admit that it is pursuing its own agenda on the world stage and not hide behind ‘coalitions of the willing’ or ‘the international community’. Having demonstrated just how ineffective the UN was back in 2003, it is a disgrace that US belligerency is now hiding behind its skirts.
