Golfers urged to ensure sun protection never under par

Most of us who go on a sun holiday abroad are now aware of the dangers of skin cancer and other conditions like premature aging that may come with lying on a beach without proper UV protection.

Golfers urged to ensure sun protection never under par

Notwithstanding the desire of many pale skinned people to get a tan, it is now considered unthinkable to swim or sunbathe without proper skin protection, even on Irish beaches.

But what may not be evident is that there are other recreational outdoor activities that also pose similar dangers, among them walking, running and, particularly, golfing.

A survey of golfers conducted by the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital in Cork reveals that while many take adequate precautions, a large number do not, leaving them vulnerable to serious conditions like melanoma.

While early diagnosis has led to a significant reduction in some cancer associated mortality rates, there is always room for improvement, particularly when it comes to prevention rather than cure.

Golfers are advised that, whatever about their game, sun protection should never be below par.
