It’s hard to describe the sensation but, not for the first time, the words on a decades-old document made me stop in my tracks.

Among the military documents and the formal reports, a heartfelt letter written by one mother to another captured the unimaginable pain of losing a son. An Italian woman had reached out to an Irish woman to express her deep sadness at the death of Clonakilty-born special agent Captain John Keany in the final months of the Second World War.
