Councillor Hazel Chu is set to replace Environment Minister Eamon Ryan as the Green Party’s general election candidate for Dublin Bay South.
On Monday, Ms Chu was formally selected by Green Party members in Dublin Bay South to contest the next election, with the voting having taken place electronically.
There were three candidates in the race to succeed former party leader Mr Ryan, including Ms Chu and councillors Claire Byrne and Carolyn Moore.
It is understood Ms Chu was elected on the first count, having exceeded the quota. A hustings between the three candidates took place last week.
Ms Chu was elected on the first count in last month’s local elections, taking home 1,973 first-preference votes in the Pembroke local electoral area.

The party believes there is a strong chance it could hold Dublin Bay South at the next general election, given Mr Ryan’s strong performance in 2020.
Ms Chu, a former lord mayor of Dublin, was one of 11 candidates who were selected by the party to run in the next election, most of whom are sitting TDs.
Mr Ryan confirmed he would be stepping down at the next general election last month, following 13 years as leader of the Green Party.
It followed a poor set of results at the local and European elections, where the Greens lost just over half of their council seats and both MEPs, Ciaran Cuffe and Grace O’Sullivan.
Integration Minister Roderic O'Gorman was elected as the new leader of the Green Party earlier this month.
