Champion jockey Nina Carberry is seeking to run for Fine Gael in the European elections.

Writing to party members, the businesswoman and sports coach who took part in Dancing With The Stars has asked for their backing to run in the Midlands Northwest constituency.

It comes after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar indicated this week that his party had sought out a former winner of the RTÉ dancing show.

Seeking the Fine Gael nomination, Ms Carberry said: "In the Ireland and Europe of today, it is more important than ever for those who believe they can make a difference to put their hand up to make things happen. As a mother of two, that is why I want to contest the European Elections for Fine Gael this June to ensure a bright future for all.

"Growing up in a family of Fine Gael supporters, lively debates and radio discussions were part of our daily live. Fine Gael’s core value of equality of opportunity resonates deeply with me. As a candidate, I embody this principle.

"Fine Gael has a commendable track record of strong female representatives, including Mairead McGuinness, Deirdre Clune, Helen McEntee, Frances Fitzgerald, Heather Humphreys and Maria Walsh."

She said that having spent two decades traveling the country, meeting people through racing and community events, she has seen first-hand the challenges faced by those living in the diverse Midlands Northwest constituency.

"I want to be a champion for balanced regional development, making sure every town and village has access to the services and infrastructure that allow people to live and work locally.

"I also want to connect and restore communities by supporting the work of the many voluntary groups and businesses to create vibrant spaces across the region."

She added that it would be a huge privilege to run for election for Fine Gael and told party members that she has proven herself in sport and business and "look forward to bringing my drive and determination to this new opportunity".
