Tributes paid to motorist, 60s, who died in Waterford collision involving bus and car

The motorist has been described as a well-known and respected family man, who was also an accomplished farmer.

Tributes have been paid to a motorist in his 60s who died in a collision in Waterford on Sunday.

The incident occurred shortly before 8pm on the N25 between Youghal and Dungarvan at Kinsalebeg and involved a bus and a car. 

The driver of the car, a man in his mid 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has since been named locally as Richard Prendergast. 

A garda spokesperson said all occupants of the bus were medically assessed at the scene and no serious injuries were reported.

The road was closed on Sunday to allow for a technical examination by garda forensic collision investigators but later reopened.

Waterford-based Fianna Fáil councillor, Tom Cronin said Mr Prendergast was a well-known and respected family man, who was also an accomplished farmer.

"His wife and family will miss him dearly," Mr Cronin told WLR FM on Tuesday.

"He was a small farmer, he had sucklers and used to breed his own calves," he said, extending his sympathies to Mr Prendergast's family and friends.

Mr Cronin also praised first responders who attended the scene of the collision on Sunday.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the N25 between Grange and Pilltown Cross between 7:30pm and 8pm are asked to make this footage available to the investigating gardaí.

The collision in Waterford was one of four separate fatal collisions in the country on Sunday.

A motorcyclist in his 50s also died in a crash in Wexford, a man in his 20s was killed in a car crash in Limerick and another man aged in his 50s died in a car crash in Meath on a deadly day on Irish roads.
