'Let's go champ': Fundraiser set up for Limerick boxer Lee Reeves after heavy knockout

A fundraiser has been set up for Limerick boxer Lee Reeves, who is in “critical but stable” condition after being rushed to hospital over the weekend.

Lee Reeves, 31, was stretchered from the ring after a heavy knockout in defeat at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday night.

A fundraiser has been set up for the Roxboro boxer to support his family and cover his medical costs. 

In less than 24 hours, the GoFundMe has raised over €32,000, with a top donation made by Donegal boxer David Weir. 

The fundraiser was set up by Jonathan O’Brien, who wrote: “Lee Reeves has given back to so many in his life, supports charities and his community in Limerick, Ireland and is one of our own. 

“A genuine good hearted man. I know he would appreciate all our kindness and support. Let’s go champ, this is your final round”.

Reeves fought Gary Cully for the BUI Celtic super-lightweight title, and he had been on top in the bout before it concluded in the 10th round with a heavy knockout.

Queensberry Promotions said on Sunday that he remained in the hospital, in a “critical but stable condition”.

“We will know more in the coming days, and our thoughts and prayers remain with Lee and his family,” they added.

Boxing promoter Frank Warren had said on social media: “All our thoughts and prayers are with Lee Reeves and his family at this time as he remains in hospital.

Reeves is not only known for his sporting achievements, but also respected in the local community for volunteering with Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention (LTSP).

Reeves, who lost his mother to suicide, joined LTSP as an ambassador after noticing them walk alongside the three bridges in their fluorescent jackets.

In 2023, he risked his own life to save a young woman who entered the river in Limerick City.

Messages of support have been pouring in online wishing the boxer a speedy recovery.

Southside Boxing Academy said they are "sending prayers to Lee Reeves and his family during this difficult time". 

"Speedy recovery Lee, you are in our thoughts and prayers," the academy added. 

Meanwhile local councillor Catherine Slattery said: "Turn Facebook blue for Lee. We all love you Lee get well soon."
