Funeral of Cork DJ Mark ‘Beanzy’ O’Brien who died at festival to be held on Friday

He was pronounced dead on Sunday morning after he was discovered unresponsive in his tent at the Love is a Stranger Festival

Friends of Mark ‘Beanzy’ O’Brien said Cork 'won’t be the same without him'.

Cork DJ Mark ‘Beanzy’ O’Brien, who died at a music festival in North Cork on Sunday, will be laid to rest on Friday.

Mr O’Brien, who was in his 30s, was pronounced dead on Sunday morning after he was discovered unresponsive in his tent at the Love is a Stranger Festival.

The festival was the second edition of Another Love Story’s roaming mini-festival series, and took place on the grounds of Ballyvolane House in Castlelyons.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, friends of Mr O’Brien, Liam Chambers and Ash O’Donovan, said Cork “won’t be the same without him”.

“Anyone who knew Beanzy will tell you what an absolute gent he was. You wouldn’t find a kinder and more caring soul in Cork,” they said.

“Beanzy was always there for us whenever we needed advice or just a friend to talk to. He was the type of person that would do absolutely anything for you.

“He shared such a deep passion for music, which is what brought so many of us together, and everything he did came straight from the heart, simply for the love and passion we all share.

Rest in peace Beanzy, you will always be in our hearts.

Another friend, Jamie Behan, said Mr O’Brien was “loved and respected across Cork's music community and beyond".

“Besides being an incredible DJ who had music in his soul, anybody who ever met Beanzy will tell you that he was one of the funniest, kindest, nicest, and most genuinely caring people they have ever met,” said Mr Behan.

“On a personal note, I will never forget our deep conversations, friendly arguments over vinyl, silly laughs, and big brotherly hugs.

“Cork has lost one of its best, but Beanzy will never be forgotten by any of us. My deepest condolences to Mark's family.” 

Mr O’Brien is survived by his parents, Julie and Tom, siblings Keira, Jake and Sophia, niece, Nora, brother-in-law, Roy, his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and large circle of friends.

He will lie in repose at the Wilton Funeral Home on the Sarsfield Road on Thursday from 5pm to 6pm. A cremation service will then take place at 4pm on Friday at the Island Crematorium in Ringaskiddy.
