A woman, aged in her late 30s, is in critical condition following a two-car collision in Co Cork.

The crash occurred on the N28 road at Carrs Hill, Mount Oval at around 10am on Wednesday.

Following the collision, the injured woman was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. Her condition is understood to be critical.

The driver of the second car, a man in his 40s, was assessed at the scene.

A garda spokesperson said he did not require immediate hospital treatment.

Following the incident, there were reports of motorists stuck in queues for hours due to long tailbacks.

Gardaí say a technical examination of the scene has since been carried out and the road has fully reopened.

"All traffic diversions have now been lifted," the spokesperson added.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are also requesting road users with camera footage, including dashcam video, from the area at the time of the collision to make it available to assist with their investigation.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Togher Garda Station at 021 494 7120, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

Elsewhere, gardaí are also at the scene of a "suspected gas leak" on the N40 road in Mahon.

Traffic is understood to be heavily backed up in the area as a result.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that gardaí are currently assisting with traffic management in the area.

Access to Mahon and St Michaels Drive is currently restricted.

A number of units of Cork City Fire Brigade are also at the scene.
