Gardaí are carrying out land searches on the northern suburbs of Cork city as part of an operation to quell a feud between two families.

The feud has led to a number of incidents in recent days — including shots fired at two houses in the city and an attempted grenade attack at another house.

In the latter incident at Meadow Park Avenue in Ballyvolane on Sunday night, a controlled explosion was carried out by members of the Defence Forces after locals were evacuated from their homes and a cordon was put in place.

On Thursday, members of the gardaí were searching around the Blackstone Bridge area in Killeens and one source confirmed that weapons “and any other evidence” are being targeted in the search in a bid to prevent further violence in the feud.

A garda helicopter also hovered overhead.

While the focus of the activity has mainly been on the city’s northside, the feud has spread to the southside with the incident in Palmbury Orchard in Togher where a shot was fired through the window of a property late on Friday night.
