A status yellow rain warning is currently in place for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare and Galway.

Met Éireann has issued an update to their previous yellow alert for just Co Kerry shortly after 10.30am on Sunday morning.

The warning will remain in place until midday on Monday.

The forecaster says heavy rain will fall at times throughout the period across all of Kerry and the western parts of Cork, Limerick, Clare and Galway.

Residents in these areas are being warned of the possibility of localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travel conditions.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland's Weather Channel says there's a chance other counties may be affected later too.

"It will become quite persistent for a time as well and certainly over mountainous there will be some quite large quantities of rain falling within a relatively short period of time as well," he said.

"That warning could well be extended to other counties as we do expect to see heavy rain across many parts of the country, specifically along the Atlantic seaboard."
