A Waterford man has won over a quarter of a million pounds on ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire? programme.

28-year-old Ger Crowley from Stradbally was a contestant on the game show on Sunday, March 10, where he took home a cool £250,000 (€293,000).

The Post Doctoral Researcher in neuroscience, who currently lives in London, began his 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' journey three years ago when he was involved in a feeder show called 'Fastest Finger First.'

As Sunday night's show was recorded for TV back in February 2023, the Waterford native was forced to postpone his celebrations, keeping his success a secret for over a year.

The researcher is already planning to use his earnings to travel the world, namely Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Crowley is not the first Irish person to enjoy success on the show. In 2004, Galwegian Pat Gibson became just the fourth person to win the top jackpot in the show's original run.

Mr Gibson is a well-known quizzer who would later go on to become a panellist on the BBC quiz show Eggheads.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? originally ran from 1998 to 2014, with Chris Tarrant as host. It returned to TV screens in 2018, with Jeremy Clarkson in the presenter's chair.
