Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy’s native city stands ready to honour him when he says the time is right, the Lord Mayor of Cork has said.

Councillor Kieran McCarthy was speaking at the March meeting of Cork City Council on Monday evening, after several councillors called on the city to honour Mr Murphy “in some shape or form" after his historic Oscar win.

The 47-year-old Cork-born actor won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday for his lead role in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning biopic, Oppenheimer.

Mr McCarthy told city councillors in City Hall that he has “reached out” to Mr Murphy and to his publicity team to explore how and when the city might formally honour his achievement.

“I await a response on that so, in terms of questions around that, whether it’s a civic reception or a homecoming, we don’t know what Cillian would actually like. So, I await a response on that,” he said.

Amid calls from some that he confer the Freedom of the City on Mr Murphy, Mr McCarthy said it is more likely that he will explore the option of a civic reception or some other form of event for Mr Murphy and for his family.

“He has been on a run of award successes for several weeks now,” he said. “And he remains very humble in his success.

All of Cork is very proud of him, and I look forward to honouring him in City Hall in the not-so-distant future.

“He is a true arts treasure, who remains grounded and he is a huge inspiration for others from Cork and Ireland involved in the international cinema scene.”

Meanwhile, the Lord Mayor sought and secured approval for the hosting of a civic reception for the Munster rugby team at a date to be decided.
