Cork City Council has warned high tides over the next 48 hours could lead to flooding in the city centre.

Both Cork and Kerry are under a Met Éireann rain warning for Monday into Tuesday, with heavy showers set to sweep across Munster from 3pm.

The yellow warning for the two counties remains in place throughout Tuesday unil 9am on Wednesday morning.

However, these showers have meant the council is preparing for flooding in certain parts of the city, with officials urging the public to put precautionary measures in place.

They say Tuesday and Wednesday morning are the times when floods are most likely, due to the high tides occurring at 6.50am and 7.32am respectively.

A spokesperson explained: "During each of the high tides listed above Cork city centre will experience flooding of the roads across the low-lying city quays.

"These high tides will be the highest tides of the next few days and have the potential to affect properties on the low-lying quays."

They say flooding will likely occur in the low-lying areas of the city centre that might affect properties on a number of streets, which include:

  • Morrison’s Quay
  • Fr Mathew Quay
  • Fr Mathew Street
  • Union Quay
  • Trinity Bridge
  • South Terrace
  • Rutland Street
  • Sawmill Street
  • Crosses Green
  • Sharman Crawford Street
  • Wandesford Quay
  • South Mall (particularly the southern side)

In addition to the above streets, road flooding will also likely occur on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings on the following streets:

  • Kyrls Quay
  • Lavitts Quay
  • Lapps Quay
  • Proby’s Quay
  • French’s Quay
  • Sullivan’s Quay

The council said the situation would be monitored and further advice would be issued if necessary.

It may be required to close Sharman Crawford Street and Wandsford Quay to traffic from 6.30am on Tuesday morning and opening both to traffic again at about 7.30am.

Similarly, this street may need to be closed again on Wednesday morning from 7.15am to about 8am.

It is not envisaged any other road closures will be required at this time.
