An injured juvenile, suspected for the fatal stabbing of a fellow minor at emergency accommodation on Wednesday, may be discharged from hospital on Friday, but could remain in over the weekend, sources indicate.

The deceased, a 17-year-old boy from Ukraine, died violently at an apartment — in Donaghmede, north Dublin — which is rented out by Tusla to house separated children seeking asylum.

Gardaí have been working with the International Protection Office and Tusla to locate any surviving family members.

It is understood they have information the deceased has family back in Ukraine. The Irish Embassy in Kyiv is believed to be assisting, with the help of Ukrainian agencies.

The victim, Vadym Davydenko, suffered extensive injuries to his face, head, and upper body, in a row with another juvenile at the centre.

It is understood the attacker used a domestic kitchen knife.

An adult carer also suffered injuries, which may have occurred during an attempt to intervene. She was hospitalised but has since been discharged.

Gardaí are in the process of taking statements from the carer, which they hope will shed light on what happened. There were also two other juveniles in the apartment at the time.

A post mortem examination was conducted Thursday, with the results expected in the evening.

The investigation team has been organising a translator for the interview with the suspect once he is released. Gardaí are maintaining a presence in the hospital until then.

Officers also have to arrange for specialist garda child interviewers to conduct the questioning.
