Four people have been arrested and gardaí have seized a a number of electric scooters and bikes, scramblers, and a drone suspected of being used in criminal activity in Dublin City.

As part of a "day of action" in the capital last Friday, August 22, officers from the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) West Functional Area searched a total of nine residences in the Clondalkin, Ballyfermot, Rathcoole, and Blanchardstown areas.

During these searches, gardaí seized:

  • €10,000 of liquid THC (subject to analysis);
  • six electric scooters;
  • seven electric bikes;
  • a diesel scrambler;
  • an electric Surron scrambler;
  • one bicycle;
  • one UAV drone;
  • and cannabis with an estimated street value of €500.

Gardaí say the searches were executed as part of Operation Meacán, which aims to tackle the use of electric motorbikes, e-scooters and e-bikes which are being used for criminal activity including drug distribution, money laundering, transporting firearms, Drug Related Intimidation (DRI) and other serious offences.

Vehicles like those seized, gardaí say, are often driven on footpaths and down parks and laneways to avoid detection by An Garda Síochána.

During the course of Friday's operation one man, aged in his 20s, was arrested and subsequently charged with an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1961 and bailed to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice next month.

Three other individuals were arrested on foot of live bench warrants.

The seized drugs have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis, and investigations are ongoing, a garda spokesperson said.
