Student charged with having over €6,000 worth of cannabis in Cork

The defendant was charged with having cannabis and having the drug for the purpose of sale or supply to others.

The Director of Public Prosecutions directed that a student accused of having over €6,000 worth of cannabis and money-laundering €3,700 could have his case dealt with at district court level but only on a plea of guilty.

Garda Kevin O’Neill outlined the allegations in the case so that Judge Olann Kelleher could decide if he too would accept jurisdiction to hear the case at Cork District Court.

Judge Kelleher said he would accept jurisdiction when he was informed of the allegations.

Mervyn Salemba who is living at an apartment at Eden Hall, Model Farm Road, Cork, had the case against him adjourned until October 9 and solicitor Daithí Ó Donnabháin was appointed to represent him on free legal aid.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said a search was carried out at the defendant’s apartment on August 23, 2022. It was alleged that a quantity of drugs with an approximate street value of €6,100 was found in his bedroom, along with two weighing scales and deal bags.

Judge Olann Kelleher adjourned the case until October 9 after he accepted jurisdiction.

The defendant was charged with having cannabis and having the drug for the purpose of sale or supply to others.

Garda O’Neill brought an additional charge against the 20-year-old. The money-laundering charge stated that on the same date, he had €3,700 in cash, knowing that it was the proceeds of criminal conduct.
