The Frames frontman was killed in a motorcycle crash on the outskirts of Dublin last week, hours after taking part in a trad session at The Wren’s Nest pub.

Yesterday, thousands of mourners attended a public wake for Mr Hansard at the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

His funeral will take place at St Patrick’s Cathedral at 1.30pm today. 

The service will be public, albeit in-person access to the cathedral itself is likely to be limited given the potential scale of the service.

The funeral will also be live-streamed, with music to be provided by Mr Hansard’s friends and family.

His family has requested that any donations be made to either the Simon Community or Ukrainian Action.

A funeral notice for Mr Hansard said he would be "deeply regretted and lovingly remembered" by his family and friends and “by the many people throughout Ireland and across the world whose lives were touched, inspired and enriched by his music, friendship and generosity”.

The Dubliner's celebrated music career began as a busker on the city's streets.

He formed The Frames in 1990, leading the band to become one of Ireland's most acclaimed rock acts.

Mr Hansard featured in Irish film The Commitments but international recognition followed his starring role in John Carney's Dublin-set film Once.

Mr Hansard and his co-star Markéta Irglová won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly, cementing his reputation as one of Ireland's best-known singer-songwriters.

He is survived by his Finnish partner, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their son, Christy, who was born in 2022.
