Mother and daughter killed in Cavan road crash named locally

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

The 10-year-old girl who died in hospital days after being critically injured in a road crash has been named locally as Irena Mereacre.

She had been a passenger in a car that collided with a flatbed truck on the R162 at Corclare, near Shercock, Co Cavan, shortly after 4.30pm on Friday.

The driver of the car, Irena's mother, was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been named locally as writer and former journalist Nell Raven, 53.

Irena was taken to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street in Dublin following the collision, where she died on Tuesday afternoon.

She is understood to have been a pupil at Milltown National School, Drumlane, Co Cavan.

Ms Raven became an Irish citizen last month and had recently recovered from cancer.

She began her career as a journalist in London before moving to Hong Kong and Pakistan, where she worked for UK and international news organisations, including The Telegraph and the South China Morning Post.

It is understood she was working on a novel at the time of her death.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

Road users who were travelling in the area between 4.15pm and 5pm on Friday and who may have camera footage are asked to make it available to gardaí.
