As Jamey Carney's loved ones prepare to lay her to rest on Wednesday, the man gardaí want to speak to in connection with her murder is being held in a jail in Jordan.

Ms Carney's boyfriend, Ahmad Al-Saqar, 28, could be extradited from Jordan if charges are brought against him in Ireland.

Although there is no extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan, extraditions can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, according to an Interpol source.

“It’s up to the country where the person has been arrested to decide whether they want to extradite or not,” a source in Interpol said.

“Normally, you need a bilateral agreement between two countries to extradite. But a country can extradite individual cases on an individual basis."

Under Jordanian law, a suspect can be detained for up to 18 months before their trial on serious charges like murder and violent assault.

Under Irish law, extradition can only be sought if a person is facing criminal charges in Ireland. No charges have been brought against Mr Al-Saqar.

But gardaí are continuing to gather evidence, and it is understood they are working to prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Ms Carney was found dead at her home off Muckross Road in Killarney shortly before 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 7.

She died from asphyxiation, but also suffered a serious assault.

Her body was found in her bed, with a sheet pulled over her face.

Mr Al-Saqar had been at her home on Monday evening.

He left Killarney at about 3am on Tuesday on a bus to Dublin before travelling to Dublin Airport, where he boarded a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

He left Ireland before Ms Carney’s body was discovered.

He was later arrested in Jordan by the country's Public Security Directorate shortly after entering the country and remains in custody there.

Garda sources confirmed Ireland did not request the arrest.

Ms Carney’s funeral will be held in Killarney today.

A Requiem Mass will take place at noon in St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney, followed by a private cremation.

Originally from Westchester, New York, Ms Carney is survived by her daughter, Michaela, her mother, Kathleen, her sister, Devon, cousins, relatives, neighbours, and many friends, especially Lily and Liga, according to her funeral notice on RIP.ie.
