The boyfriend of murdered mother-of-one Jamey Carney could be extradited from Jordan if charges are brought against him in Ireland.

Although there is no extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan, extraditions can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, according to an Interpol source.

“It’s up to the country where the person has been arrested to decide whether they want to extradite or not,” a source in Interpol said.

“Some countries have very strict rules, some are more relaxed. Normally, you need a bilateral agreement between two countries to extradite. But a country can extradite individual cases on an individual basis.

“Irish authorities and Jordanian authorities would have to be in touch, and the Jordanian authorities would have to decide to extradite.”

The source said Interpol would not be involved in the extradition process, which would be managed directly between the two countries.

Under Irish law, extradition can only be sought if a person is facing criminal charges. No charges have been brought against Ms Carney's boyfriend, Ahmad Al-Saqar.

However, gardaí have been liaising with international law enforcement agencies in an effort to locate and question the 28-year-old Jordanian national in connection with Ms Carney's murder. He left Ireland in the hours after her death.

Gardaí are continuing to gather evidence, and it is understood they are working to prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the coming weeks.

Ms Carney was found dead at her home off Muckross Road in Killarney shortly before 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 7.

An autopsy found she died from asphyxiation after being assaulted.

Her body was found in her bed, with a bedsheet pulled over her face.

Mr Al-Saqar, 28, had been at her home on Monday evening.

He left Killarney at about 3am on Tuesday on a bus to Dublin before travelling to Dublin Airport, where he boarded a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

He left Ireland before Ms Carney’s body was discovered.

He was later arrested in Jordan by the country's Public Security Directorate shortly after entering the country and remains in custody there.

Garda sources confirmed Ireland did not request the arrest.

Mr Al-Saqar had been in a relationship with the 43-year-old American-born mother of one for several months before her death. He is originally from Jordan but had lived in Ireland since 2024.
