Man dies after swimming across Liffey following alleged assault in Dublin
Gardaí in Ballyfermot are investigating all the circumstances surrounding a number of incidents at the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge and on the Chapelizod Rd, in Dublin on Saturday evening
A man has died after swimming across the River Liffey following a series of incidents near Dublin’s War Memorial Gardens.
Emergency services were called after the man, aged in his 30s, entered the water at around 10.20pm on Saturday after crossing a grass verge at Memorial Park.
He swam across the river to land adjoining three rowing clubs, including the Garda Boat Club, by Chapelizod Rd.
He was treated near the river bank when he got to the other side and was rushed to hospital, but later died of his injuries.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Ballyfermot are investigating all the circumstances surrounding a number of incidents at the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge and on the Chapelizod Rd, in Dublin on Saturday evening.
A Garda spokesperson said the man had entered the water “following an alleged incident of assault in the vicinity of the War Memorial Gardens at approximately 10.20pm".
They said the male “was treated at the scene by personnel from the Dublin Fire Brigade before being removed by ambulance to St. James’ Hospital, where he subsequently passed away the following day.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out and an investigation is under way by a senior investigating officer.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the area, or who may have camera footage, including dashcam, between 9pm and 10.45pm on Saturday is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 11, or any Garda station.
