Former taoiseach Enda Kenny has been appointed as chairperson of a Government agency used to promote Ireland as a hub for international legal services.

Mr Kenny was confirmed as the chair of Ireland for Law on Wednesday, saying he was honoured to take up the role.

“Our legal system is a core national asset, recognised globally for its independence, efficiency and the exceptional skills of our courts, judiciary, solicitors, and barristers," said Mr Kenny.

“Adding over €6.7bn to our economy annually, and supporting 52,000 jobs across the country, the legal sector is a vital engine of our economy.”

The agency was established by the justice minister in 2019 as a method to promote Ireland as a centre for international legal services.

Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan said Mr Kenny’s “extensive experience on the global stage” will assist Ireland for law and showcase the State’s legal expertise.

Mr Kenny served as taoiseach between 2011 and 2017, and was leader of Fine Gael between 2002 and 2017.

He first entered into the Dáil in 1975, before he retired ahead of the 2020 general election.
