A status yellow gale warning also applies to all coasts of Ireland and the Irish Sea from 3pm Sunday, with southerly winds expected to reach gale force eight at times.
Today, the north and east of the country will see spells of sunshine, while cloudier conditions with outbreaks of showery rain in Munster and west Connacht slowly extend northeastwards through the afternoon and evening.
Drier weather with some sunny spells will develop across southwestern and some western counties later.
However, Met Éireann said wet and breezy conditions will spread across the country overnight.
Sunday will begin dull and breezy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. As the day progresses, heavier spells of rain will develop, especially in southern and western counties, with spot flooding later.
Southerly winds will increase to fresh to strong and gusty, reaching near gale to gale force in some coastal parts later.
Monday will start largely dry with sunny spells. However, it will become cloudier and breezier, with showery outbreaks of rain pushing in from the Atlantic, though much of the south-east will stay dry.
Frost and icy patches are expected on Monday night, with lowest temperatures of -2C to 2C in light westerly breezes.
