Woman, 80s, becomes fifth person killed on Irish roads since Saturday

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to the collision, which happened in Dunleer at approximately 12.20pm on Monday.

A woman in her 80s has died after being struck by a bus in Co Louth, becoming the fifth person to be killed on Irish roads since Saturday.  

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to the collision, which happened in Dunleer at approximately 12.20pm on Monday.

The woman was transferred by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was later pronounced dead.

The road has been closed for a technical examination of the scene to be conducted and diversions are in place.

Any road users who were at Lower Main Street, Dunleer, between 12.10pm and 12.30pm and who may have camera footage have been urged to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

The victim of Monday's crash is the fifth woman to be killed on Irish roads since Saturday. 

In Co Clare, a Canadian tourist in her 70s died in a collision with a tractor at Toonagh, Tulla, on Saturday afternoon.

Investigations are also continuing into the death of a woman in a crash in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford on Saturday.

The woman, 20s, died after she was struck by a car, on the R702 in Curraghgraigue at about 3pm.

Another woman, named locally as 63-year-old Theresa Morgan, was fatally injured after being struck by a car in Ashbourne, Co Meath at about 7.10pm on Saturday evening.

Finally, 82-year-old Bernadette (Bernie) Cranley, a native of Lifford in Co Donegal, died following a two-vehicle crash in Co Tyrone on Saturday.

That crash happened on the Mellon Road between Omagh and Newtownstewart near the Ulster American Folk Park at about 12.30pm. 

Ms Cranley was the driver of one of the vehicles involved.

There have now been 66 fatalities in 63 collisions on Irish roads so far this year. The number has fallen from 63 fatalities in 68 collisions in the same period last year.
