Almost 30 tertiary degree courses outside the CAO 'points race' open for applications

The new Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless said 'students can now begin their studies at a local further education institute before seamlessly progressing to higher education, without relying on the CAO points system.'

New degree courses in subjects like nursing, ICT and social work available outside of the CAO 'points race' are open today for applications. 

Originally launched in 2023, tertiary courses have grown rapidly. A total of 41 new courses will be available this year, with 27 open for applications on Saturday. A further 14 will be launching in March.

Among the courses launching is general nursing, where students will start their degree with the Education and Training Board (ETB) in Cork or Kerry, before moving on to Munster Technological University. 

Enrolments in tertiary programmes surged by 68% in 2024, according to the new Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless.

“What makes this option so wonderful, is that students can now begin their studies at a local further education institute before seamlessly progressing to higher education, without relying on the CAO points system.” 

Tertiary degrees provide a "transformative" opportunity for students who might have previously thought higher education was out of reach, according to Tanya Jones of the National Tertiary Office (NTO).

“Talented students are now able to fully embrace their potential without the constraints of points. 

In 2025, an increasing number of tertiary pathways are being introduced, catering not only to recent school leavers but also to those returning to education. 

"This expansion ensures that education is more inclusive and accessible, empowering more people to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.”

Meanwhile, CAO applicants who have already made a application for a college course have up to 5pm on February 1 to add, remove or re-order courses free of charge. 

Ahead of the normal closing date this Saturday at 5pm, the CAO has confirmed that an exceptional application facility will be made available for applicants who are still experiencing power and internet outages due to Storm Éowyn.  The facility will be made available from February 1 at 5pm until February 6 at 5pm. 

Applications for Uversity scholarships also open on Saturday, February 1. Uversity is a registered charity providing scholarships for mature students, from less advantaged backgrounds, to pursue a bachelor's degree in any of the third-level institutions in Ireland. The deadline for applications is March 31.
