'Another injustice' as Jason Corbett's killers to be released early

Molly Martens and Tom Martens are set to be released three weeks earlier than planned.

The family of Jason Corbett has described it as “another injustice” that his killers are being released three weeks earlier than planned.

The Limerick businessman was beaten to death with a brick and baseball bat by his American wife Molly Martens and her former FBI agent father Thomas Martens.

The father and daughter were jailed for a minimum of seven months and a maximum of 23 months at Davidson County Court in November for the manslaughter of Mr Corbett in 2015.

The pair had already served 44 months in jail after being convicted of second-degree murder in 2017 but struck a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter.

In a statement, North Carolina Department of Corrections (NCDP) said it received amended judgment and commitment documents from the court in Davidson County for both of the Martens.

“Both were amended to include 21 additional days of time served, to correctly reflect the actual number of days served during their first incarcerations,” a spokesperson said.

The additional 21 days of time served brings forward the release dates for both to June 6, 2024, rather than June 27.

In a post on Instagram, a spokesperson for the family said they had been informed of the earlier release date, adding that it was “another injustice for Jason and his family”.

It comes as a “human error” resulted in a mistake on the correctional facility’s website in December stating that the former FBI agent and his daughter could be released that month, sparking an outcry from Mr Corbett's family.
