UL student Joe Drennan was 'loved and adored by so many', funeral hears

Tributes Paid to Talented Journalist Joe Drennan (21) Killed in Suspected Hit and Run in Limerick

The funeral of journalist and student Joe Drennan, who died at the weekend, heard that he was "loved and adored by so many".

The 21-year-old University of Limerick (UL) student's funeral took place in Laois on Wednesday.

Joe, who was the youngest of seven, was killed in a collision in Limerick City on Friday, October 13.

The Mountrath native was waiting at a bus stop on the Dublin Road in Limerick when the collision took place.

“Joe was a real hard worker and showed great drive and ambition," a eulogy written by his mother Marguerite and his aunt Julie Bennett said.

It was read at the funeral mass by UL journalism lecturer Kathryn Hayes on behalf of the family.

It said Joe "was going to be a star. He never said no to any opportunity that presented itself.

He had wonderful friends, a family who adored him and he knew real love. Not everybody gets that.

Ms Hayes mentioned Joe’s passion for journalism and his love for giving marginalised voices a platform.

He had recently been appointed the editor of the Limerick Voice, a newspaper and online news platform run by final year journalism students at UL.

“He spoke about bridging divides and fostering a deeper understanding of marginalised communities, through dynamic story telling techniques.

He wanted to give a voice to members of the Latin American, Ukrainian, LGBT+, and homeless communities, whom he believed were often misrepresented in Irish media.

Mr Drennan urged his Limerick Voice team to “find a voice that they themselves had not heard before.”

He was shortlisted earlier this year for Journalist of the Year at the annual Student Media Awards for the work he produced as part of his work placement with Gay Community News.

Ms Hayes concluded by saying Mr Drennan left an “indelible mark” on all who knew him.

Mr Drennan reposed at his home Knocknagad on Monday and Tuesday.

His Requiem Mass took place at St Fergal’s Church in Camross followed by a burial in the adjoining cemetery.
