Gardaí arrest man after 'hostage' situation

A man was arrested by gardaí in Mayo on Wednesday evening after he barricaded himself in a business premises and threatened to injure himself with a knife. 

Gardaí responded to reports of a man brandishing a knife in a threatening manner in the Market Square area of Ballina at about 6pm. 

"The man, aged in his mid-30s, secured himself in the premises and threatened to injure himself," a Garda spokesperson said.

"There was no other persons present in the premises at the time.

"A hostage barricade situation then ensued."

The incident was then brought to a conclusion by gardaí and the man was arrested. 

He is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Mayo. 

A Garda spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.
