The governing body for sporting and recreational canoeing in Ireland is to work closely with third-level institutions to better support safe participation in the sport.
It comes after a major investigation into a fatal incident involving 27 members of the University of Limerick (UL) Kayak Club found the trip was not properly assessed for risks given the conditions on the day, and the experience of those taking part. Aisling O’Connor (21) from Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, drowned after she was trapped under a tree branch in the river near Glencar, Co. Kerry, during a trip in November 2019.
