Some areas of the country may see some snowfall on Christmas night, according to Met Éireann.
Overall, today will be a cloudy day with widespread showers and limited bright spells for most of the country.
By mid-morning, showers may become heavy and prolonged at times, bringing with them a risk of spot flooding in some low-lying areas.
There is also a possibility of hail and thunder locally.
By this evening, clearer and much colder conditions will move in across the northwest. Highest temperatures on Christmas Day will range between 6C to 10C in moderate southwest breezes.
Tonight however, Met Éireann says rain will clear from the east and southeast early and skies will clear.
Conditions will becoming quite cold with frost and some icy stretches expected.

Scattered showers will follow thereafter across the west and north, some turning to hail, sleet or snow. Temperatures tonight will range between -2C to +3C.
St Stephen's Day will be a much brighter day although it will remain cold.
Met Éireann forecasts sunny spells and scattered showers which will be most frequent in western and northern coastal counties. Showers early in the day may fall as sleet in some parts but they will transition back to rain as the day goes on.
Temperatures will drop back close to freezing once again on St Stephen's night but it will warm up quickly as cloud and rain spreads from the west becoming widespread by morning.
