Commission to examine legality of collecting DNA from Tuam Mother and Baby Home survivors

Experts are looking at whether there is any legal block to gathering DNA from survivors of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

Survivors want DNA collection to start as soon as possible given the age and health profiles of some of the women involved.

It is hoped the information may help identify the remains of the children buried at the site when excavation begins.

The Government has commissioned Dr Geoffrey Shannon to look at whether it is legal to gather DNA from survivors, and how to manage privacy issues.

Excavations at the Tuam site are due to begin late this year if the Government passes the necessary legislation on time.
