Christmas 'can be terrifying for abuse victims'
Women's Aid has said Christmas time can mean a terrifying countdown for women who are experiencing domestic abuse.
The charity which supports victims of domestic violence has announced plans to make its helpline available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from January 4 (1800 341 900).
Women's Aid says abuse can often increase around Christmas time, as consumption of alcohol tends to increase.
CEO Margaret Martin said Christmas could be a dreadful time for domestic abuse victims.
"You have this very idealised notion of happy families, so in a sense it makes the abuse much more stark and difficult to bear," she said.
"It can be a very lonely time, and a very worrying time. Women would often ring and ask us for help about how they protect themselves and their children. A lot of women are trying to manage the whole situation."
