International White Ribbon Day raises awareness of domestic abuse

Women's Aid is highlighting the problem of digital abuse and domestic violence.

The charity has said it has spoken to women who have experienced overlapping forms of digital abuse including offensive or threatening emails and text or instant messages.

It also says some women have experienced being tracked and monitored through technology on their PC and mobile phones.

A study in Britain found that 41% of abused women experience digital abuse and stalking.

Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan will address a conference on the issue today.

The husband of murdered Jill Meagher has said we need a change the culture of how we think about violence against women.

Tom Meagher has said despite years of campaigns, the subject is still taboo in Ireland.

Today is International White Ribbon Day, which highlights the number of women around the world that face abuse on a daily basis.

Jill Meagher was raped and killed in Melbourne, Australia in 2012.

Her husband Tom is urging people to blame the perpetrators and not the victims: “Unfortunately we live in a culture where women are constantly asked to justify their own victimisation. By where they were, what they were dong, what they were wearing, and they often churnalise a lot of self blame, which we have to keep stressing it is never ever ever the woman’s fault.

“That needs to be something that runs through society in a very real way.”
