World War One remembered today on Anniversary

The anniversary of the ending of World War One is being marked around the globe today.

Armistice Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Versailles 97 years ago.

An annual event is taking place in Dublin's Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin this morning.

Members of the Defence Forces will take part in the commemoration at Glasnevin Cemetery, where hundreds of soldiers killed in the conflict are buried.

The Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys will be joined by representatives of the British, Australian, Austrian, New Zealand and Italian governments.

Chair of the Glasnevin Trust John Green has said the memorial has become more inclusive in recent years.

“We will have an ecumenical service where we will remember those, all those Irishmen and everyone who served in the first World War, and who died and gave their lives in the cause,” Mr Green said.

In the last number of years now it has become more appropriate to remember not just Irish men and women or members of the British forces or the Allied forces but to remember all those who died.”
