Garda Commissioner denies border region is 'twilight zone'

The Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan has hit out at the Fianna Fáil leaders description of the border region as a "twilight zone".

Micheál Martin used the term in the Dáil yesterday in the wake of a report for the British Government on paramilitary activity.

But today Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan has said claims that policing is not carried out in border areas is simply unfounded.

“To suggest in any way that there is an intelligence failure or that there is a blind eye being turned to criminality or indeed that the border is a twilight zone is very unfounded.

“The evidence of that if we look over the last number of years, so if we look from 2010, 93 people have been charged before the Special Criminal Court.”
