Gardaí urge householders to install lighting to discourage burglars

Gardaí are today urging people to light up their homes to put off would-be burglars.

This year's 'Supporting Safer Communities' campaign is being launched at the National Ploughing Championships at Ratheniska, Stradbally, Co Laois today, and will run until Saturday.

The National Crime Prevention Unit says that homes that are not well lit or seem to be vacant are more vulnerable to burglary.

This is a particular problem later in the year, as twice as many homes were robbed between 5pm and 10pm in the evening last November when compared to the same time in June.

Gardaí are urging people to use security lighting, or a timer switch on lamps, to create the impression that someone is at home.

"The darker evenings expose homes that are not well lit or appear unoccupied," said Sergeant Kelvin Courtney of the National Crime Prevention Unit.

"We want home owners to illuminate their homes to eliminate burglary. Security lighting can help reduce crime and act as an effective deterrent to burglars.

"Appropriate lighting will help make your home more visible to neighbours and passers-by, thereby increasing the likelihood of discovering unwanted intruders and trespassers.

"Outside security lighting should be properly installed. Avoid the creation of shadowy, dark areas and position the light fitting out of reach.

"Aim for a uniform light level and direct the light beam appropriately. Consider your neighbours and avoid light pollution."
